Simon Shim is a distinguished professor in the Computer Engineering Department at San Jose State University (SJSU), where he plays a significant role in both research and teaching. With an extensive background, Professor Shim previously served on the editorial board of IEEE Computer (www.computer.org/computer) and was the area editor for Internet Computing for a notable five-year period. His professional journey includes experience as a Director at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, CA, where he contributed to pioneering work on in-memory databases. Additionally, Professor Shim has served as a guest editor for IEEE Computer, curating special issues on topics such as “High-Speed Security” (2004), “The CAP Theorem’s Growing Impact” (2012), and “Next Generation Memory” (2013).

Throughout his academic career, SJSU Professor Shim has made significant contributions to the field, authoring over 50 research papers published in prominent journals and conferences, including IEEE Computer, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Concurrency, ACM MONET, and the Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications by Kluwer Academic Publishers. His intellectual property portfolio includes several patents, and he has also co-authored a technical book. Professor Shim earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.

Currently, his research focuses on areas such as internet computing, database management, machine learning, and information retrieval. He has been active in the organization of academic events, serving as a workshop chair for various IEEE conferences in data engineering, mobile commerce, and electronic commerce. Moreover, he held the role of editor for the Web Technologies column at IEEE Computer for five years. Beyond these editorial responsibilities, Professor Shim has contributed to the global academic community by serving on technical committees for numerous international conferences and workshops. His dedication to advancing computer science and engineering has greatly enriched both SJSU and the wider research field.
